Alonissos is part of a unique complex of small islands in the region of Central Aegean. It is an island of outstanding beauty with lush green vegetation that reaches the sea. It is home to the National Marine Park, the largest marine protected area in Europe and the first underwater archaeological museum.
It is an island of 65sq. km, most of which is covered with virgin pine forests. The visitor can get familiar with special flora and fauna such as the Mediterranean seal Monachus Monachus, the wild goat of Yioura or the Red Coral.
There are 6 settlements on the island.
PATITIRI
It is the capital of the island and home to all main services (medical surgery, police station, port authorities etc). The commercial area of the island extends on the two central roads that depart from the port. Here, one can find supermarkets, bakeries, fruit markets, tavernas, cafes, etc. Also, one can find hotels, tourist offices, car and motorcycle rental agencies, as well as boat rentals, diving centers, tourist buses and taxis.
ROUSSOUM YIALOS
At a distance of 1km from the port, you can find the picturesque bay of Roussoum Yialos. It offers an organized pebbly peach to swim as well as accommodation, tavernas and a café.
VOTSI
The quaint little fishing village of Votsi lies about 1.5km north east of Patitiri. Although small, it offers amenities such as romantic taverns around the cliffs, as well as, hospitable accommodation.
HORA (OLD TOWN)
West of Patitiri, about 3km away, lies the Old Town or Horio as the locals call it. The old capital of the island is famous for its natural beauty. Walk among the picturesque cobbled streets and admire the breathtaking sea views and the other villages as far as Skopelos island. Hora is the most popular destination especially in the evening with all the quaint tavernas, bars and folk art shops.
STENI VALA
Steni Vala is a natural harbour of exquisite beauty. It is located about 11 km north east of Patitiri. One can find cosy accommodation and tavernas famous for their traditional local dishes. There is daily bus connection.
KALAMAKIA
Kalamakia is a quaint fishing village next to Steni Vala about 12km north east of Patitiri. With tavernas built around the picturesque waterfront, it is famous for the fresh fish and local dishes.
On most beaches on Alonissos, the visitor will find sunbeds and taverns or cafes.
KAVOS
Just 30m from the “Maria Studios”, you can take a quick morning or afternoon swim at the picturesque rocky beach of Kavos. Access to the water is easy and is done by the iron ladder there. Underwater lovers can go diving or simply snorkel.
CHRYSSI MILIA
One of the best beaches on Alonissos. Shallow, warm and sandy water, ideal for swimming even when the sea is choppy.
KOKKINOKASTRO
Situated beneath a steep red cliff, Kokkinokastro is an impressive beach which combines sand and pebbles. When approaching from above, the view is breathtaking. Dozens of shades of blue, a huge red cliff entering the sea and green pine trees touching the crystal-clear waters will be engraved in your mind and heart forever.
LEFTOS YIALOS
A magnificent beach with white pebbles washed by clear blue waters. A true paradise, surrounded by pine trees and shady olive trees, will make your day divine.
AGIOS DIMITRIOS
The largest and most popular beach of the island, with an impressive horseshoe shape, is Agios Dimitrios. The south part, with small pebbles and an amazing view to the island of Peristera and the quiet north part, with larger pebbles, overlooking the island of Kyra Panagia comprise a unique inspiring landscape for infinite relaxing moments.
MEGALOS MOURTIAS
Going down from Hora, you will find yourself on the picturesque beach of Megalos Mourtias. If you stay until late, you’ll be able to see a magical sunset behind the hills of Skopelos.
MILIA YIALOS / GEORGI YIALOS / TSOUKALIA /YIALIA
Milia is an exotic beach with crystal turquoise waters, set in a virgin pine tree forest while Georgi Yialos’ shallow water is ideal for families with children.
Enjoy the sunset in the wild landscape of Tsoukalia which took its name by the many fragments of ancient pots which one can find at a close distance from the beach.
Discover Yialia, a tranquil beach, situated in a small rocky cove on the south west part of the island, very close to Hora. An amazing place featuring a restored traditional windmill on one of its sides.
OTHER SECLUDED BEACHES
For those who seek serenity during their holiday, Alonissos can also offer some true hidden gems. Vithisma, Mikros Mourtias, Tourkoneri, Megali Ammos and Spartines are only a few of them. Find the paths that lead to them and enjoy the best secluded beach experience, watching an exotic sunset.
